Surviving the Freelancing World: A Newbie’s Online Writing Career Alternatives

Surviving the Freelancing World: A Newbie’s Online Writing Career Alternatives

Surviving the Freelancing World: A Newbie’s Online Writing Career AlternativesThe path to a successful online writing career is not easy. Aspiring scribes typically find jobs as ghost writers. This does not give them the right to put their name on the very article they spent time and effort on.

So once in a while, The Youthful Granny VA accepts contributions from other writers – newbies and “veterans” alike. I’d like to provide an avenue where they can show their writing skills and give them the right to the byline. Having a published article with their name on it opens a lot of opportunities: higher rates, better jobs, and of course, some bragging rights.

So if you feel that you have what it takes to build an online writing career and want to have your work published here, send me a message at liberty@theyouthfulgrannyva.com so I can give you the guidelines.

Here’s a sample article written by Angelica Cariaso. Read on and enjoy!

Having a home-based job is great! The setup accommodates both homebodies and travelers, allowing them to work from the comforts of home or from the other end of the world. Countless people, both students and professionals alike, have become enamored with the idea of pursuing an online writing career. However, there are many factors that can affect your chances of landing a job. You have skill level, quality of internet connection, and expertise, to name a few.

If you want to build your online writing career, your skill level is very important because technically, everybody can write. Thus, how well you transform your ideas into a great article, among other things, determines your success.

A Newbie’s Opinion

I have been so fortunate to have encountered great mentors, but not everyone is so lucky. Still, because we have Google, it is a sin not to find materials and articles that could help you on how to write your first article or on how to do SEO writing, for example.
Being a newbie myself, I have found that constantly expanding my knowledge as well as improving my skills are not only helpful, but necessary. Especially if you want to make a living out of this, you too must be open to learning new things that would multiply your job options. You do not have to give up your online writing career. It simply means having the luxury of choices that demand more than writing articles.

Online Career Alternatives

1. Virtual Assistance

There are many tasks that are outsourced to virtual assistants, but most of those, you already know how to do. Your responsibilities as a virtual assistant may vary, depending on the needs of a client. The Youthful Granny VA actually started as a writer. She explored virtual assistance later on “to break the monotony of writing”. Your online writing career needs not end with this job, because you would still be writing a lot for sure.

2. Translation

Translation

All of us are assumed to be at least bilingual, speaking English and our native tongue. Because of this, you already have the potential. The next and harder step would be translating the text or audio without losing content. In this area, you may need to practice because you have to mind the differences in sentence construction between the two languages. Personally, I have always loved languages because it is a mirror of a people’s development and of its culture. If you want to give yourself an edge, you can go to Duolingo and learn a language of your choice.

3. Customer Service

If you have a good internet connection and a lot of patience, you might find this a perfect fit for you. Some that you would have to do include providing accurate information to the customer, identifying their problem and giving solutions, as well as keeping records of these interactions. Good speaking skills would definitely be needed too as you are to communicate with people orally.

If you are set on building your online writing career, these alternatives will hone your abilities in different types of writing as well. The next time you spot an opening in any of them, do not be afraid to try something new.
